Meerkat, Periscope and even Blab  are the much talked about and widely covered live-streaming apps of late. However, before these launched, Facebook was experimenting with a live streaming feature for public figures.

In early August, that feature launched. Named “Live,” it is only available the Mentions app, and only to celebrities with verified pages.

In this article, Techcrunch outlines some reasons “Live” might a better solution than Meerkat or Periscope, including posterity. Videos on “Live” don’t disappear whereas on Meerkat and Periscope they are removed immediately or within 24 hours respectively.

It will be interesting to see if, by the time “Live” launches to regular users, the popularity of live streaming has declined and if Facebook missed an opportunity.
