Facebook Contests

Running contests on Facebook is a great way to increase engagement.

If you’ve spent any time on the social network, you’ve likely seen a business asking you to “like, comment or share” a post to gain entry into a contest or for a chance to win.

Posts like this can definitely motivate followers to interact with your brand. I mean, who doesn’t want to win a free bouquet of flowers, a free lunch or an oil change.

But did you know there is something wrong with this “ask?”

It actually goes against Facebook’s rules and page terms. Specifically, you can’t ask people to share a post to enter a contest.

According to Facebook:
“Personal Timelines and friend connections must not be used to administer promotions (ex: “share on your Timeline to enter” or “share on your friend’s Timeline to get additional entries”, and “tag your friends in this post to enter” are not permitted).”

This doesn’t appear to be strictly enforced. And of course, it might appear “everyone is doing it.” But if you want to “walk the walk” of a trustworthy and responsible business, we suggest complying with the rules and leaving off the “share” portion of your content.
