Some brands simply can’t overcome preconception, poor messaging or simply bad product ideas.
We are all aware of the less than stellar performance of some big brand product launches. New Coke and Crystal Pepsi are two that always top the mental list.
But did you know that the product whose slogan is “Once you pop, you can’t stop” created a fat-free version of their chips with Olean…an ingredient known to have a laxative effect? Not a good combination if you can’t stop eating the tasty chips.
Then there was yogurt shampoo from Clairol, whose ad had a free cookbook offer. Surprisingly (or maybe not), people tried to eat the shampoo, which was not an edible yogurt.
